Harry Eastwood and Sophie Michell, the two fabulous foodies from Channel 4’s hit cookery show, are celebrating the start of the UK salad season (May-October) by launching a competition to find The Great British Salad.
Inviting you to ‘grab a salad bag and let your imagination run wild’ the girls are asking the British nation to invent a brand new, tasty salad recipe. The winner will receive a cash prize of £1,000 and the opportunity to have their recipe published nationwide.
“The French have the Niçoise, the Americans have the Waldorf and the Mexicans have the Caesar,” says Sophie, “it’s about time we Brits celebrated our tremendous variety of fresh produce and cooking creativity and invented The Great British Salad. For too long, people all over the country have been serving up shredded iceberg, half a cucumber and a bit of tomato to their families – there’s simply no excuse for this boring dish when you have such a fantastic range of salad leaves and local ingredients available to you.”
“The key to a great salad,” says Harry “is fresh, quality produce and not being afraid to mix and match flavours and textures. Salad bags are a convenient way to experiment due to their unusual mixes of leaf varieties, which you can’t often find on the high-street. I always have a bag in my fridge - they’re one of the freshest products you can buy and are great for throwing together a really quick, healthy and delicious meal.”
To give you a little inspiration, Sophie and Harry have created three exclusive recipes:
Healthy twist on classic British dish: crispy bacon, poached egg, fried potatoes and watercressspinach and rocket with a tomato Worcestershire sauce dressing
“Originating from sunny Nice in the south of France, I’ve used a seared tuna steak, green beans, new potatoes, boiled eggs and herb salad with a honey and mustard vinaigrette.
“The Waldorf was first served in the Waldorf Astoria in 1893; it’s a great classic. My version uses smoked chicken, pecans and an Italian and salad mix.”
To enter, simply send your original salad recipe using a bag of salad leaves. Entries must be received by 31st July 2008. Two runners up will each receive £500 cash prize.
This competition is now closed.
Congratulations to the lucky winner; Mary Jarvis of Lytham Saint Annes.
