From crisp sweet Cos to delicate frilly Red Oak Leaf, salad packs now offer an amazing range of lettuce leaves. But they don’t stop there. They also offer nutrient rich brassicas, such as watercress, rocket, shredded cabbage and tatsoi, delicate sprigs of herbs, swiss chard, spinach, sliced peppers, carrots, beetroot and onion – and the more colourful the pack, or the darker green the leaves, the more nutrients they will contain. And, of course, it all adds up to a delicious range of flavours and textures.
In a recent survey, one in two consumers said salad packs encouraged them to eat more salads and therefore helped them towards their “5 a day.” And as health professionals are now urging us to “eat a rainbow” – one fruit and vegetable from each of the colour bands - to ensure we get the best range of different vitamins and phytochemicals available to us, what better dish than a salad? Just one cereal bowl (80g) of salad leaves counts as one of our five portions.
